Peroneal spastic flat foot. Its treatment by osteotomy of the os calcis.

چکیده
A series of patients treated by osteotomy of the os calcis for the relief of peroneal spastic flat foot is reviewed. The late results have been evaluated, and the literature reviewed. It is suggested that this is an effective method of treatment which has advantages over tarsal fusions.

Etiology of peroneal spastic flat foot.
A type of rigid flat foot which is accompanied by contraction of the peroneal muscles has long been recognised. The etiology is obscure. Correction of the deformity seems to be prevented by tension of the peroneal muscles, and there has been wide acceptance of the thesis that the deformity is caused by peroneal muscle spasm induced by painful stimuli arising from the tarsal joints. It has been ...
متن کاملThe inheritance of tarsal coalition and its relationship to spastic flat foot.
Tarsal coalition is not a modern phenomenon. Archaeological findings have demonstrated this anomaly in a Mayan civilisation in Guatemala (Harris 1965) and in a pre-Columbian Indian civilisation in Ohio (Heiple and Lovejoy 1969), both dated around 900-950 A.D. Buffon (1769) was probably the first to recognise the occurrence of tarsal coalition, although the undated specimen in the Museum of the ...
متن کاملTibialis Spastic Varus Foot with Tarsal Coalition.
Anomalies of tarsal coalition have been described by anatomists (Anderson 1 880, Pfitzner I 896) but their correlation with the clinical manifestation of spastic flat foot was not appreciated until Slomann (1921) and Badgley (1927) published their reports. Harris and Beath (1948) described the important part played by tarsal coalition as a cause of peroneal spastic flat foot. Their contribution...
متن کاملBone anomalies of the tarsus in relation to peroneal spastic flat foot.
Harris and Beath (1947) made a valuable contribution to surgery when they described for the first time the developmental anomaly at the sustentaculum tali-the talo-calcanean bridge-as an important and frequent element in the production of rigid flat foot. They also performed a further service by drawing attention to the hitherto rather neglected pa pers of Slomann (1921) and Badgley (1927). Bot...
متن کاملA review of elongation of os calcis for flat feet.
Between 1959 and 1974 the late Dillwyn Evans treated severe symptomatic flat feet by elongating the os calcis. The long-term follow-up of 20 of these patients with a total of 23 feet is presented 7 to 20 years after the operation. At review 17 of the 23 feet showed very good or good results and it was concluded that this is a useful procedure for severe cases of flat feet which appears to stand...
